Garofalo is 30 years old and has been an amateur comedian in Raleigh for the past 9 years. He has opened for Lewis Black and Bryan Tucker and has performed up and down the east coast. In April of 2009, his full-time job cut his salary by 40% and he had to sign up with a debt consolidation company. He looked for a second job to make ends meet, but they were scarce. Having done benefits for many charitable organizations, including the Alliance of AIDS Services – Carolina and a hurricane Katrina benefit for the Red Cross, he decided to do a benefit for himself.
www.12konblack.com is a comedy/begging blog aimed at featuring the Garofalo’s comedy, while at the same time begging visitors for a one dollar donation. The text blog is updated on a daily basis and the video blog is scheduled to be updated on a weekly basis.
According to Garofalo, “The question I get most often is, ‘Why should I give you some of my hard earned money for your stupidity in getting into debt?’ I’m working hard at entertaining everyone and I’ve always been good at making people laugh. I just figured that right now everyone could use a good laugh and maybe this will give people a little bit of hope in these trying economic times.”
